TEI Group developed the Shangri-la University Alliance concept in 2010. This Alliance was founded by the Yunnan University of Finance and Economics, Tianjin University of Commerce, Jilin University of Finance and Economics and the University of Newcastle, Australia. In addition to these Founding Members, new partner universities are being invited to join and expand the program. TEI Group is a Founding Partner to the Alliance and is responsible for the administrative and management functions of the program.

The current SUA Program offers students a Dual Masters Degree, one from a China-based university and the other from the University of Newcastle in Australia. The student studies for one year in China and the second and final year is studied in Australia. All subjects are delivered in English and the student has internationally recognised dual masters degrees. Due to the huge economic growth in China the initial programs being offered are business and marketing based. In the future as more partners join the Alliance more subject areas for masters degree studies will be added.
